Leeds Beckett Students' Union (LBSU) is led by students for students! Their mission is to make your uni life better! Your Student Officer Team is elected by you to lead the Students' Union into the academic year. - Following the lifting of all pandemic restrictions and advice from the Department for Education, we currently anticipate that no social distancing measures will be in place on campus during the 2023/24 academic year, enabling a normal on-campus experience. Our aim is to ensure that our students experience Leeds Beckett University, our courses, campuses, facilities and services to the fullest extent possible, while maintaining an environment where students and staff feel safe.
- In all cases, the health and safety of students and staff is our priority and we will continue to follow guidance from the UK Health Security Agency, the Department for Education and all other recognised government agencies (such as the Office for Students) in full and keep matters under close review at all times. Academic and administrative staff at our University ALWAYS use your student email address to contact you. It is vitally important that you check this account regularly. If you choose not to, you will miss out on key information about your course, your assessments and your progress.
You can forward emails from your student email address to a preferred personal email address, however, quarantine and spam filters needed by our University mean that emails sent from external email addresses may be delayed, blocked or deleted. It is therefore important that your student email address is the only email address that you use to contact University staff. Please make sure that you inform your Course Administration team whenever you change your address and contact details. It is important that you also update your records yourself. This will ensure we can always contact you in an emergency, and that you receive any important University communications that we may need to send you.

MS Teams is part of the Office 365 suite used by staff and students for communication and collaboration:
- Access via MyBeckett on University devices as well as on personal mobiles via a free downloadable app.
- Participate in online meetings and video conferencing in groups or one-to-one.
- Work on shared content, ideas, projects and online learning.
- Utilise breakout rooms to create more dynamic sessions

Timetable Information

Taught sessions, both mandatory and optional, will be scheduled and included in your online timetable. Depending on your course, this may also include scheduled online teaching and learning sessions where student engagement is required at a specified time or tutor pre-recorded lectures.

Course Overview
The aims of the programme are to:
- To provide both an academic and vocationally-oriented curriculum which will enable students to develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the structures, concepts and processes involved in marketing, and marketing and advertising management by organisations.
- To understand and positively respond to the changing social, economic, financial, technological, political, international, ethical and legal frameworks within which organisations operate
- To provide a stimulating learning environment that fosters a critical, reflective, creative and challenging approach to the study of marketing and advertising management.
- To provide opportunities that encourage students to develop their capability to take positive initiatives, respond effectively to new ideas, adapt to changing circumstances, and address multi-faceted problems with an open mind.
- To offer students opportunities for specialisation in preparation for their career in marketing, advertising or related areas.
- To facilitate the development of a range of skills and values which encourage students to use their talents to the full in achieving their personal and career aspirations, particularly in relation to marketing and marketing and advertising management.
- Students will have developed a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the structures, concepts and processes involved managing marketing and advertising by organisations and the changing social, economic, financial, technological, political, international, ethical and legal frameworks within the global environment in which they operate.
- Students will have developed the capability to take positive initiatives, respond effectively to new ideas, adapt to changing circumstances, be enterprising and address multi-faceted problems with an open mind.
- Students will have gained a critical, reflective and challenging approach to the study and application of marketing, marketing management and advertising management.
- Students will be digitally literate and have gained knowledge of areas of specialisation in preparation for their career in marketing, advertising or related areas.
- Students will have developed a range of skills and values which allow them to use their skills, abilities and talents to the full in achieving their personal and career aspirations, particularly in relation to marketing, advertising and associated management activities.
At Level 4 students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of underlying concepts and principles of marketing organisations, their management and the global environment in which they operate
- Explain the role of information and its management in a business and marketing environment
- Recognise the need to collect, organise and interpret data using appropriate digital and physical techniques
- Examine the role of effective communication within the internal and external marketing environments
- Apply an understanding of the principles, concepts and application of customer-oriented marketing in an enterprise culture
- Recognise and challenge the differing contexts and perspectives within which marketing takes place
Assessment & Feedback
The modules are assessed with a balance of examinations, coursework and other appropriate methods (such as presentations and pitches) in order to best ensure that the module's outcomes have been achieved.
These are assessments are conducted in accordance with the requirements of the professional bodies which give our course and certain modules exemptions. The precise breakdown of the balance can be found in the Course Specification.
It is the responsibility of each individual student to note the exam/assessment periods in the academic calendar and make sure that you are available during those periods. It is essential that you ensure you are available as examination submission dates, locations and coursework/written assessment submission dates, both first sit and resit, cannot be changed.
Further details of your schedule of examinations can be found on your timetable once the examination schedule is released. Coursework submission deadlines will normally be found on MyBeckett, via individual Module Handbooks/other module guides and also communicated during relevant lectures and tutorials.

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.
It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Full details of the penalties for late submission of course work are available in section 3 of the Academic Regulations at https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/our-university/public-information/academic-regulations/. Please check the penalties that apply to this course as some Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body requirements may mean that different penalties apply.
If you have been recommended 'flexibility around deadlines' as a reasonable adjustment in a Reasonable Adjustment Plan, your Course Administrator will be able to advise you of the process.

Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four working weeks of your submission. Each Module Handbook will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments. The four working week period allows tutors to ensure that marking is robust, fair and consistent.
With a large volume of submissions will mean a large workload for your tutor, and to ensure feedback is beneficial to you time is needed to consider and then produce this. A series of internal, and external (at Level 5 and Level 6), moderation also has to occur which is also time consuming, but it ensures that the mark and feedback you receive are commensurate with other academics and instructions.
However, feedback is not limited to just your assessed work. Tutors will provide formative feedback during each tutorial; on knowledge, application, academic skills and individual progress. This is often verbal and therefore can only be provided face-to-face during those tutorials, missing tutorials will mean missing out on valuable feedback. Tutors will provide feedback on activities and areas such as:
- short presentations (individual and/or group)
- discussion around reading
- discussion around contemporary marketing practice
- completion of preparatory tasks for tutorials
- case study analysis
- subject-specific activities
- mock examinations
As a University it is expected that students take ownership of their coursework and understand that draft work is not reviewed, commented on or annotated during modules prior to submission.
Results from module assessments and decisions on progression to the next level of study (e.g., from Level 4 to Level 5 of an undergraduate degree) or awards (if you are in the final level) are available on the Results Online system: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/exams-assessments-and-awards/results-online/
Results will appear within Results Online five working days after the date of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided).
If you are unsure about when you might receive your results or have queries relating to your results, you should contact your Course Administrator.
The University recognises that, from time to time, students may encounter issues which may prevent them from being able to submit or take assessment. Where this is the case, students may be able to submit their 'extenuating circumstances' for consideration. Please see the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances web page for further information.
If you have not passed a module at the first attempt you will be eligible for re-assessment. You will need to consult your Module Handbook/MyBeckett for details of the relevant re-assessment process (e.g., whether it is coursework, an examination, a presentation or other form of assessment/when it will take place/what the deadline is).
You will be advised via Results Online of your options for re-assessment. It is your responsibility to consult Results Online and ensure that you understand what assessments, if any, you are required to resit.

Teaching & Learning
A variety of teaching techniques are used ranging from online lectures to workshop-based computer software employed for problem solving; supervision and mentorship of individual and group based projects; tutor directed case studies; experimental work in Practical Marketing and Managing Marketing Projects to simulate decision-making in situations of uncertainty through simulation software or real-life activities; testing of alternative theories by acquiring and analysing data; the use of feed-forward as a means of teaching and learning e.g. by allowing students to consider past submissions, suitably conditioned for student use; MyBeckett-based diagnostic tests for skills in Literacy, Numeracy and IT supported by Skills for Learning; use of Podcasts, Apps and other relevant platforms in Digital Marketing Decisions and Media Planning Project and the use of Research software packages in Marketing Research.
Our choice of learning and teaching activities is then governed by the degree to which they allow students to achieve the module learning outcomes, and thus the course learning outcomes. Learning and teaching activities become more complex with the Levels, developing skills typical of the Levels consistent with the University's Education Strategy, as follows:
H4: Engagement
H5: Contextualisation
H6: Independence
These are mirrored in the Level Skills Specification of the Graduate Attributes.
At the same time, the context within which students develop these skills differs with the levels: at Level 4 the context of learning is typically simple and tutor controlled; at Level 5 more complex but still largely tutor controlled; at Level 6 complex/dynamic, open ended and involving considerable student discretion.
Teaching and learning processes will be strategically employed to ensure that Graduate Attributes are developed effectively. For example, in the Level 4 Digital Marketing Decisions module students will work on live SEO projects (through the Mimic Pro simulation), which have a global focus, require enterprising thought and some specific digital literacy. This in then taken further at Level 6 in the Media Planning Project module where these attributes are further developed, building on work at Levels 4 and 5 to produce a strategic plan for real-life organisations.
To ensure that students see progression between levels and identify with the course and the staff team throughout their degree, we have sought to ensure that the personal development processes act as a vehicle for unifying the student experience firmly in the context of Marketing and Advertising Management, and to further consolidate course identity by staffing key elements of the course from within the Marketing with Advertising Management team.
VLE tools will be employed to support learning and teaching activities in seminars - document and web links to guide reading/preparation, discussion boards to stimulate debate/allow peer assessment before and after the seminar.Level 4 |

Attendance & Absence
The University expects you to attend and contribute fully to all mandatory sessions on your timetable as set out in your student contract. Engagement in your lectures, seminars and practicals is an important part of your learning - contributing both to the University community and the learning experience of your fellow students on the course. This includes engagement in scheduled virtual learning and activities and meetings in online environments related to your studies.
We monitor your engagement at the University as regular attendance and academic achievement are closely linked. Moreover, by monitoring your engagement and attendance we can identify students who may need our guidance or support at an early stage to help them progress in their studies. This is part of our commitment to ensuring an excellent education and experience and supporting your success at Leeds Beckett.
The University does understand that from time to time there is good reason why you cannot attend a class, and in this instance you must contact your School office to let them know. This may then be recorded as an 'authorised absence'.
Please note that any attendance reports can be shared with you and your Course team. You might be asked to contact your School office so that appropriate academic or pastoral support can be offered, should your attendance record give cause for concern.
Our most important aim is to support your studies, but we are also required to report attendance to various external bodies such as the Student Loan Company and the Home Office. There are measures in place for students who seek to falsely register either their own or fellow students' attendance.

You must notify your Course Administrator if you are absent (for example for an interview, emergency unforeseen circumstances, or for compassionate leave). If you are going to apply for mitigation you will need to provide written evidence of the reason for your absence.

If you are unable to study because of another illness for more than 14 consecutive days (including weekends), you must provide us with a Fit Note.
You can send a digital copy of your Fit Note to your Course Administrator, and then send the original by post.
If you are absent through illness on the day of an examination or assignment deadline and you intend to apply for mitigation, you must also provide us with details as possible. Your submission for mitigation may be made online and the circumstances surrounding it may be self-certified unless your period of absence is prolonged. Generally, all absences of 2 weeks or more will require the submission of verifiable documentary evidence.

Any Leeds Beckett student who suspects they may have, or have been diagnosed as having a serious infectious disease such as coronavirus, Mumps, TB, measles, meningitis or chicken pox should not attend campus. For notifiable diseases, students should notify their Course Director or Course Administrator as soon as possible giving information regarding which groups of students (and/or colleagues and clients on placements) you have been in contact with and when. For some diseases, such as TB and meningitis, your doctor and our Student Wellbeing Team have a responsibility to notify the West Yorkshire Public Health Protection Team who may also wish to speak to you (or your family) to determine if others require screening or medication. International Students
Please be aware that our University fully complies with United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) policy at all times. There are legal reporting requirements for all students in the UK on a Student visa, and full attendance is mandatory for all students who have a Student visa. Professional Accreditation or Recognition Associated with the Course
There are no additional or non-standard regulations which relate to your course however what you study has been recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Professional Marketing Competencies and we are part of their Graduate Gateway programme.
If you graduate with a 2:2 or higher then you are exempt from one module on the CIM's Diploma in Professional Marketing, supporting you in the achievement of becoming an associate member of the institute.
Sandwich Placement Information
Leeds Beckett is dedicated to improving the employability of our students and one of the ways in which we do this is to support our students to gain valuable work experience through work based placements. Our placement teams have developed strong links with companies, many of whom repeatedly recruit our students into excellent placement roles. 48 weeks minimum, undertaken between year 2 and year 3 (Level 5 and Level 6)
Students are responsible for obtaining their own placement, with assistance from the University. The locations will vary, dependant on the opportunity.
'In Year' Work Placement Information
The aim of the Marketing Placement module is to foster the identification and development of individual, transferable, personal, intellectual and subject related and/or professional skills and competencies through work experience.
The learning outcomes for the module are as follows:
- Critically analyse the practical applications of marketing studies undertaken at H4 and H5 to the work placement
- Demonstrate performance on the placement congruent with the development of HEA/CIM generic competencies for student employability
- Appraise development needs to perform key marketing roles and responsibilities
- Critically evaluate key employability competencies and skills developed during the placement
There is no formal teaching on the Marketing Placement module. As students are based in the workplace, learning is predominantly experiential, and the learning strategy is entirely individual. Students are expected to rely on key autonomous learning skills developed during their first two years at university such as time management, problem-solving, initiative and judgement.
Although students would be taking a gap year between Levels 5 and 6, the Marketing Placement module is at H6 level and therefore the assessment requires skills of critical analysis and evaluation commensurate with that level.
48 weeks minimum
There is no specific location or organisation for the marketing placement, and no restrictions on where the placement may take place, but the student will be expected to perform a marketing role.
Skills, Employability & Graduate Opportunities
There are a variety of professional, personal and academic skills that we work to develop during your time on the course.
The course aims are derived from both the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Professional Marketing Competencies and the QAA Business and Management Subject Benchmark Statement as of October 2016.
These benchmarks have been contextualised in relation to this course. Philosophically, it aims to inspire individuals in their thinking, business (and therefore marketing) practice and in their purposeful /active engagement with their studies, learning, employability and CPD.
Practice intelligence will be developed through practical, experiential and authentic learning experiences and students will be supported in developing their academic rigor, critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills such that they will be able to operate effectively in an inclusive, digital, sustainable and global world. In addition, the course will support the development of 'enterprising' skills through exposing them to opportunities for creative and innovative thinking, team working and collaboration as well as opportunity to engage and network with employers and external organisations.
During the course, students will be encouraged to consolidate and make transparent their learning, knowledge and skills necessary for a marketing practitioner - such that they will be career-prepared and will 'know what they know' with the ability to evidence this. There will also be the opportunity to be part of the student Marketing Society and engage with local businesses in all sectors to support real-life marketing projects and learn from those in post.
By the end of the course graduates will have acquired a set of intellectual and personal skills together with at least part professional accreditation which will open the door to either postgraduate study or graduate-level employment.
You will have opportunities to gain recognition during your time at Leeds Beckett University for the extra activities you do in addition to your studies, including volunteering, student societies, playing in our University sports teams and being a Course Representative.

There are three Graduate Attributes for Leeds Beckett University and these are tailored to suit your course. The three attributes you should achieve by the end of the course are for you to be digitally literate, have a global outlook and for you to be enterprising. Learning about these attributes and being assessed on them as part of your modules will provide you with capabilities which are essential for your future career and wider life as you move on from your studies here.

The modules at each level for each attribute are listed below and examples of the assessment and module activities will clarify how you will see and work with the attributes through your course.
Digital Literacy
The 'Digital Literacy' attribute is developed and assessed throughout the programme via the use of digital media in various module contexts, including use of software packages for organising and presenting work, including individual and group presentations, reports, portfolios, dossiers, posters and podcasts together with data manipulation. Development of this competence is seen as an integral part of the Induction Programme.
Enterprise
The 'Enterprise' attribute is developed formatively and summatively assessed throughout the programme, primarily through tasks which require thinking 'outside of the box', the ability to identify opportunities, the ability to make quick robust decisions, organisational skills, leadership skills or project management skills. These elements are identified within module specs where they apply.
Global Outlook
The 'Global Outlook' attribute features at all levels of the Marketing with Advertising Management degree programme. Those modules including this element focus on the international marketing and business environments and how these impact on the world of marketing and business through global management practices and the operation of international organisations, and in which firms operate.
The course has the Graduate Gateway partnership with the CIM as one of its employability themes. This 'part award' reflects the attempt to develop a brand distinctiveness and add value through an increase in the likelihood of higher salaries and higher employment rates for graduates.
This enhances the opportunity to increase students' employability and hence leverage enhanced salary starting points as against sectoral destination norms. Exemptions from Level 3 and Level 4 modules, as well as part exemption from L6, CIM Professional Marketing qualifications are offered through studying on this degree.
Wider employability skills will include presenting, communication, assertiveness, confidence, managerial ability, decision-making, problem-solving, time management, planning and measurement are integrated into the course. In the first year, alongside a digital marketing module, Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course is studied, providing certification in this area of marketing.
An employability event is held for final year students where a variety of agency-side, client side and recruitment organisations attend, present and network with students.
There are opportunities for you to be mentored by marketing practitioners, take part in live marketing projects, broaden your experience by studying overseas, hear guest lecturers from the world of marketing and advertising, and take a placement year within companies as diverse as Asda, Disney, Warner Brothers and GE. These opportunities during the course will provide wider employability benefits for graduates as they will support you in your personal and professional growth
Our dedicated employability and placements office will support you and provide you with access to a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement and employment guidance and seminars are available on topics such as CV and letter writing, how to succeed at interview, assessment centres and psychometric tests.
The opportunity to continue your professional studies with the CIM is one that a number of graduates follow, as is that of studying for a Masters or MBA.
Learning Support
If you have a question or a problem relating to your course, your Course Administrator is there to help you. Course Administrators work closely with academic staff and can make referrals to teaching staff or to specialist professional services as appropriate. They can give you a confirmation of attendance letter, and a transcript. You may also like to contact your Course Rep or the Students' Union Advice team for additional support with course-related questions.
Your Academic Advisor will be an academic member of staff who teaches you on your course. Your Course Director will make sure that you are given the contact details of your Academic Advisor at the beginning of each year, usually in your course induction. If you need support, but you're not sure where to go, your Student Advice Team are here to help. The team are an essential part of your Student Support Network and are dedicated to ensuring you can access the advice and support you need, when you need it most.
Student Advice can also help in the practical elements of university. The team will produce your first campus card and assist you in replacing your campus card if needed throughout your time at Leeds Beckett. They can provide Confirmation of Enrolment and Bank Letters for our current students and full or partial transcripts for our graduates and fully enrolled students.

What should I do next?

Library Academic Support
The Library Academic Support Team can help you develop your academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing and analysing data, and research skills such as how to find, use and evaluate information for your studies. The team liaises with your lecturers to provide the information resources you need for your subject and to arrange academic skills sessions to support you in your studies.
The team maintains a number of websites and modules to support your learning:
- In your Subject guide, you'll find a variety of information resources which have been selected as a good starting point for research in that area. These are available on the Skills and Subject Support web page or via My Beckett.

- LBU Study Smart is a module in MyBeckett which introduces you to the key skills and services you'll need to study successfully at Leeds Beckett. There are also additional modules you can take as you move through your course to help you transition between study levels. OneDrive
OneDrive Leeds Beckett is your individual file storage with 1TB of storage space. With OneDrive you can access and share your files across your devices. Media Equipment - free loans

University life can have its ups and downs, and occasionally you may find yourself in need of advice. That's where we come in. Here at the SU we have a free advice service that is here just for you, the students at Leeds Beckett University.
The Advice Service at LBSU is a confidential, non-judgmental service run by professional advisers.
The service is independent from the University, so if you are having any problems with your course you can talk confidentially with us - although we do work with the University to find the best solutions, we would only contact them with your permission. We can advise on a range of topics including all aspects of the University Regulations and Procedures, housing issues and finance issues. We can guide you through any processes or procedures.

We have copies of all the modules reading list items in Library stock either as single copies, multiple copies or eBook copies. We purchase multiple copies of all texts written by Marketing and Advertising teaching staff, such as Customer Centric Marketing and Sustainable Marketing Planning, and most are now are available as eBooks.
Over and above this we have we have a wider, more diverse collection of Marketing relevant titles shelved at 658.X not listed on module lists. BA (Hons) Marketing with Advertising Management students are encouraged to read marketing and business books to suit their personal tastes and to read around the module resource directed sources.
Online resources provided by the library via the Resource Database are vital to your studies, including EBSCO, WARC, Mintel, Taylor and Francis, Emerald and Statista. You are also able to subscribe, for free, to Campaign Live, a leading industry resource which is incredibly useful in providing contemporary examples of marketing work, as well as resources, jobs and more.
The business, media and financial pages of the quality daily newspapers e.g. Financial Times, Times and Guardian are readily accessible by all levels on BA (Hons) Marketing with Advertising Management. More popular, simpler treatment newspaper titles are also available. For students regional (Yorkshire) business awareness we recommend the Yorkshire Post. Major newspapers collections relevant to Marketing with Advertising Management students are Press Display and NEXIS.
As well as this there are support partners such as Skills for Learning, MyHub, MyCareer and Employability and Progression.
Student Voice
We are committed to working in partnership with you and the Students' Union to provide you with an inclusive, safe and engaging learning environment which is conducive to study for all our students and our staff. An important element of your time studying with us is your engagement in developing your learning. Your engagement and attendance on your course enables you to further your learning and supports your achievement, course completion and aspirations for the future. We provide support for you to maximise your time studying with us and to develop your learning, skills and abilities to support you in your chosen career path.
We seek active participation by all our students in the continuous enhancement of our courses and through our monitoring, annual review and enhancement processes. These are formal processes used by our University for assuring the academic standards and quality of your course and its continuous improvement. These processes utilise your feedback, External Examiners' reports, feedback from staff and others, data relating to student outcomes on the course and student surveys to reflect on areas of good practice and areas for further enhancement. Informal feedback is also welcome at any time either via your Academic Advisor or module tutor or via your Course Representative. Course Representatives (Reps) at undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels are student volunteers who represent you in formal and informal meetings with the University, and follow up on actions that have occurred because of student feedback. You can become a Course Rep, volunteering to represent the views of your peers in order to improve students' academic experience.
In the first few weeks of your time at Leeds Beckett, your Course Director will facilitate an opportunity to appoint Course Reps on your course.

PT delivery is usually at half the intensity of the FT equivalent course, although there may be flexibility to increase your pace of study to shorten the overall course duration.
